Young Photographers Project: Wembley to Soweto…to Cumbria

The Wembley to Soweto…to Cumbria project is part of a wider Celebration of Youth scheme, promoting the activities and contribution young people make to Cumbria and its communities as a whole.

Wembley to Soweto was established by actor David Westhead who enlisted the help of an international photographer, John Cole. John worked intensely with a group of underprivileged young people in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the view to 'feeding their family with a camera'. The project was a resounding success and is now on tour in the UK which will culminate with an exhibition at the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Cumbria is one of only a handful of areas in Britain chosen to take part in the project and will provide eight successful applicants with the opportunity to work alongside John Cole from the 8th to the 18th May 2012.

To be eligible to apply you will need to be:

• 16 to 19 years old, or

• 16 to 25 years for those with specific support needs.

• Not in full-time education, training or employment.

No formal qualifications are required to apply, just a genuine interest in photography with the enthusiasm to learn more. During the course you will be expected to keep a learning diary and work towards a national recognised qualification. Do not worry if you are not academic as you will be supported to achieve throughout your learning.

As part of the course you will travel around the county (transport will be available) taking various photo shoots. A camera will also be provided along with access to a computer. On finishing the course you will be given the opportunity to work with us to capture a variety of events in Cumbria, with a view to some of your work being exhibited in the future.

This project may also offer the opportunity to become part of the national team and attend the Olympic Games 2012, a chance in a life-time!

To take part in this exciting opportunity you need to complete and return your application, along with a photograph you have taken. You will need to get your application in by the closing date which is the 9th March 2012.

If you are successful in the shortlisting process you will then be invited to an informal interview on either the 29th or 30th March 2012, after which the 8 successful applicants will be notified.
